Hi sorry I haven’t written in a few days, but I have been busy. I got my financial aid check in the mail on Tuesday and went and bought my textbooks and got things I needed for the semester. Yesterday I went to the Milwaukee Art Museum to see the Toulouse Lautrec posters of Paris exhibition. I had already gone to exhibition when it opened and loved it, but I had to go again because my teacher sent me a paper assignment before the semester starts. The teacher sent the paper to me before the semester starts because it is about the exhibit, which ends on September 9th and the exhibition is relevant to what I am learning in the class. In the paper I have to go into detail comparing and contrasting two different posters. I chose two different pictures advertising the Moulin Rouge one by Toulouse Lautrec and the other one by Jules cheret. Here are the posters that I am going to write about.
I think I will write about school in this post right now, as I am going back on Tuesday. I go to UWM Peck school of the arts. I completed my foundations year last spring and am looking forward to taking “real” art classes. I wrote about this in my about me section, but I figured that not everyone has read that section so I will write about it here. I graduated in December of 2010 from UWM with a degree in linguistics. After that I didn’t know what to do with myself. Before graduation I never really thought about what I wanted to do once I graduated, which was a huge mistake. I was a linguistics major because linguistics was easy for me, but I didn’t want to go back to school and get my master’s in linguistics, and there wasn’t much else I could do with my degree.
Last summer I decided follow my passion, I didn’t want to settle for a life that I didn’t want. I decided to go to school for jewelry making, because that is something that I love to do. UWM is the only school in the area with a jewelry making and metal-smiting degree and I hear that it is a really good program. I had to go through my foundations year of art school before I could take any jewelry making classes. I took Art survey, 3D concepts, drawing 101, and Art History 102 my first semester in spring of 2011 and in the fall I went part-time and took 3 studio classes. I took 2D concepts, digital arts practice culture and theory, and the third class I took was drawing 102. I discovered that I actually have a talent for drawing and art in general. I love to make pictures in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. After my foundations year I am unsure which direction I want to go into, I am torn now. I enjoy making jewelry, but I like what I make now and I do not know if I will be able to make a living and pay back my student loans once I graduate. I am thinking of changing my major to graphic design. The graphic design program is highly competitive and I might not be able to get into it because there is a portfolio review in order to get in. I am thinking of changing my major for many reasons, the first is that I could actually make a living doing this, the other main one is that I enjoy using the computer to make art.
The good news is that I don’t have to make a decision right away. I am going to take both intro to graphic design and intro to jewelry and metal-smiting and see what I like best. In addition to intro to jewelry making and intro to graphic design, I am also taking intro to typography and design survey, which is the class where the teacher assigned a paper already. I am super excited about school starting. I wrote a lot here today and I think I will stop here. Let me know what you think of my post by making a comment in the comments section.
